A Miracle Happens When We Open the Door to Jesus
The Covenant We Make When We Open the Door to Jesus
We open the door to Jesus when we make a covenant with him to keep his commandments.
This is in correlation with the betrothal ceremony in ancient Israel. After the betrothal agreement (Ketubah) was settled, the Bridegroom would knock at the bride’s door. Opening the door showed that she had accepted the marriage proposal. They would break bread and drink wine together to seal their covenant relationship with each other.
As part of the agreement, Groom agreed to provide for his bride to protect her, and if an enemy captured her, he would redeem her. She agreed to be loyal and faithful to Him.
In the Bible, Jesus is often represented as the Bridegroom and the people of his church as the bride.
When baptized, we covenant with Jesus to obey Him and keep His commandments. We take His name upon us like a bride takes her husband’s name when they marry. We open the door to Jesus.

Making Changes
Most of us are familiar with the painting of the Savior standing outside a door. However, the door does not have a handle on the outside, so It can only be opened from the inside.
To open the door to Jesus, we covenant to make changes in our lives.
For some, keeping the Lord’s commandments may seem too difficult. They don’t want to open the door to Jesus and allow Him inside because their house is way too messy. They may even decide to live in the mess instead of making the needed changes.
Others begin to clean up their habits, hoping that by working really hard, they can tidy up their mess, and then they will open their hearts and welcome Jesus in.
One lesson I have learned is that Jesus stands at the door, ready to help us clean up our mess. He loves us and is eager to lend a hand.
We are told in Ephesians that we are saved by faith after all we can do. But by whose faith? Jesus is the one who has always been faithful.
Jesus has many ways to help if we are willing to open the door to Jesus and let Him in.
Jesus said, come near unto me, and I will come near unto you.
You might wonder how this could apply to us

I have discovered that when I sincerely want to change or keep one of his commandments, I first talk to the Lord about it. I will explain what I want to change and why. I ask for his help. Sometimes, I have pleaded for his help, knowing I could not do it alone.
That is like opening the door to Jesus.
Then, I make a real effort to change the habit. Amazingly, a miracle happens at some point: the spirit takes away my desire to break that commandment. It does not happen all at once, but it is marvelous when it does happen. My burden is lifted.
In the New Testament, Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you. My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
When we work together with Christ, keeping his commandments becomes easier because once He sees we are sincere in our commitment to change, the spirit removes our desire to break that commandment.
In recent months, I have pondered the effect of this process over my lifetime.
I look back and see that because of my commitment to Jesus, I have made many changes, each of which has brought me greater happiness.
When I Open the Door to Jesus I find Joy
I have become a better person by learning to keep one commandment or making one change at a time.
I am so grateful for Jesus’s help. I could not have done it without him.
Paul calls it “becoming a new creature in Christ.”
Recently, pondering this thought, I have greatly appreciated our Savior’s atonement. I have seen how Jesus has helped me move forward with greater confidence—confidence in the Savior’s love, especially in the Savior’s mercy.
It started with a simple desire to keep his commandments.
However, with Jesus’s help, I genuinely like the person I have become, for I have become a happier, better version of myself.
I am glad I opened the door to Jesus and let him in.
