A Heavenly Joke
One of my favorite jokes refers to revelations 21:21.
St. Peter came to a very rich man and informed him that he would die and go to heaven the next week.
The rich man pleaded with Peter to allow him to bring just one thing with him. After much badgering, Peter agrees. The rich man ponders, what he should bring. He finally makes his decision, and places it in a suitcase.
When he arrives at the pearly gates, Peter is curious about what the man brought. Peter opens the case and sees two gold bars. He exclaims “Pavement! Why would you bring pavement?”
This joke reminds me that my view of heaven is probably not even close to reality. When God speaks of mansions and celestial glories as bright as the sun, it must be grander than anything my limited imagination can conceive.
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9
My Thoughts About Heaven
Paul describes our resurrected bodies as having flesh. Jesus described his resurrected body like this:
And he said unto them, why are you troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me and see; for a spirit has not Flesh and bones as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, have you any meat? And they gave him a piece of broiled fish and of an honeycomb. And he took it and did eat before them.
Luke 24:37-42
Jesus went to a great deal of trouble to prove he had a physical resurrected body. A body that according to Paul could never die. So we, too will have permanent bodies of flesh and Bones in the resurrection. The flesh may be different then we now have, but it will still be a physical body. The body will be perfect. No more sickness or disease. No broken or missing limbs.
Hellen Keller once said, “I am looking forward to heaven because there I will be able to both see and hear.”
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev 21:4
One point which Jesus made to his disciples, pleases me. Apparently we will be able to eat after we are resurrected. I don’t know about you, I like food.
